Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, to be like us.”…So God created man in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply.” Genesis 1:26-28

When reading this passage it’s easy to think this is only talking about reproducing more human beings, but the deeper truth is that God is concerned with the multiplication of His image. God commissioned Adam & Eve to produce the fruit of God’s image in their own lives, and multiply God’s image across the earth by reproduction. 

But when Adam sinned against God and fell from the state of God’s true image, the human race thereafter was made in the image & likeness of fallen Adam. To restore God’s image to mankind, God sent His one and only son Jesus the Christ to the earth. Jesus came as the image of God, the Son of God, and the original image of man, the Son of Man.

Jesus was crucified, buried, then rose from the dead three days later. His shed blood cleansed the original sin of Adam, and began a new race as the last Adam. This was God’s plan from the beginning to re-commission the human race to be fruitful and multiply, once again fill the earth with God’s image.

For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. Romans 8:29

All of us are called be born a second time and be conformed into the image of Jesus Christ. After Jesus resurrected He re-commissioned His disciples with the original commission God gave Adam to multiply God’s image across the earth, and this time it is to be done by discipleship.

“Go and make disciples from all races baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.” Matthew 28:19-20

Jesus Christ is the way. To be conformed into the image of Christ is the only way to fill the earth with God’s image & likeness. And to be conformed into the image of Christ, we must all become His disciples.

We must become a disciple of Jesus Christ.

We must be conformed into the image of God’s Son.

We must multiply the image of God through discipleship.

We must be about multiplication!
